8 Entertaining Indoor Activities in Maine for Adults

Spring has finally arrived! As anyone who lives in New England knows well, with the spring season comes a mix of delightful, sunny days and some chilly, rainy ones. Don’t let the indecisiveness of Maine’s weather stop you from getting out of the house and enjoying yourself! We’ve put together eight of the best indoor activities in Maine for active adults to take advantage of on those days where you want to have fun, but you just don’t want to be outside!

1. Portland Museum of Art

The Portland Museum of Art is the perfect way to spend a morning, afternoon or evening, walking the halls surrounded by significant works of art. You’ll find renowned European, American and contemporary art, as well as pieces done by notable Maine artists. 2. Freeport Outlets

If you don’t mind a little bit of walking outdoors while staying mostly inside, downtown Freeport is a great way to enjoy shopping while you get your steps in! Along with the legendary L.L. Bean Flagship store, you’ll find countless retail outlets and boutiques to explore. You’re sure to find what you’re looking for (and plenty of wonderful gems you may not have been looking for!) as you stroll the charming streets going store to store.

3. The Axe Pit

Have you ever wanted to try axe throwing? This is a quickly growing sport in the US, and there’s no better time to give it a go than on a less-than-sunny day!

Located in South Portland, The Axe Pit is unique because it was one of the first axe throwing venues in the U.S. and is the only axe-throwing venue in Maine. The Axe Pit was also one of the founding members of the World Axe Throwing League to bring together axe throwing venues in support of the growing sport. Part axe-throwing and part bar, this is a great place to go with friends who are up for a little adventure! Get a quick lesson if you need one, put your skills to the test, then grab a cold beverage to celebrate!

4. Maine Mariners Hockey

Attending a Maine Mariners ice hockey game is a can’t-miss event! Playing out of the Cross Insurance arena in downtown Portland, the Mariners are a professional ECHL team that brings the heat. Treat yourself to some stadium snacks and a cold drink of choice, and sit back to enjoy what’s sure to be an incredible game! To purchase tickets, check out the Maine Mariners website here.

5. USM’s Southworth Planetarium

The Southworth Planetarium, located in the Science Building at University of Southern Maine’s Portland campus, is an educational experience that will blow your mind! Sit back and gaze up at the planetarium’s immense dome as the show takes you through space and time, exploring the galaxies to the seas. Public shows are Monday and Wednesday at 1PM, Friday at 7PM and 8:30PM, and Saturday and Sunday at 3PM (with the exception of June through August).

6. Muse Paintbar

Muse Paintbar in Portland is a unique, creative way to flex your painting skills while enjoying a night out! Simply review their calendar and choose the painting that you’d like to do on a night that works for your schedule. There is also a bar in the studio where you can order beverages and snacks! Whether you turn this into a date night or outing with friends, you can trust that it’s going to be a wonderful evening!

7. Bayside Bowl

If you love to bowl, Bayside Bowl is the place to do just that! Located in downtown Portland, they take their bowling seriously – they offer ten-pin bowling across 20 USBC sanctioned lanes, coupled with craft cocktails and mouth watering dishes. They even do happy hours until 5PM on Mondays through Fridays, offering $2 beers, $5 margaritas and chips and guacamole! If you want to keep the party going after you bowl (and if the weather happens to clear up) make your way up to the Rooftop deck bar for an unbelievable sunset view.
